I’m sure you’ve noticed a lull in the action around here lately, but these things happen when summer (and numerous family events) hit town.  We’re back in action now and have a few quick  ideas to supplement your summer fun this weekend.

Looking to start the thing off right? Head over to Pamplemousse in Salem this evening from 5 -7 pm to help them celebrate 9 years in business. They’ll have cupcakes, wine and treats as well as Magic Hat’s #9 Not So Pale Ale.

If a bit respite from the sun sounds good on Saturday afternoon, Kappy’s in Peabody will be hosting their Taste of New England, which features locally produced spirits, beer and wine. It’ll be a nice opportunity to taste the wares of one of our favorite distilleries, Gloucester’s Ryan & Wood, as well as the brand new Privateer Rum out of Ipswich, MA.

Saturday evening the place to be is Gloucester, for their 2011 Downtown Block Party. Not only will there be live entertainment, street performers and general carousing, many of the local restaurants will be running deals for the evening.Yyou might want to stop in Cape Ann Brewing, where the guys are throwing a pig roast with live music, starting at 6pm.

Did you know that Hawthorne Hotel Chef de Cuisine Jennifer Normant is a contestant on this season’s Hell’s Kitchen? To celebrate, The hotel will be hosting a viewing party in their Grand Ballroom on Monday night at 7pm. Meet the chef, watch the show, and partake of cocktail and hors d’oeuvres special on offer that night.

On a sad note, we were devastated to see that an electrical fire caused severe smoke damage to both 5 Corners Kitchen and Terry’s Ice Cream in Marblehead Wednesday afternoon. Both eateries are closed until further notice for clean up. We wish them a speedy recovery and hope they’ll be open again as soon as possible. If you’re in Marblehead this weekend, show Terry’s your support by stopping by their brand new ice cream truck, which will be parked across the street from the building. We love the idea of one Facebook poster, who suggested that Chef Barry of 5 Corners open an adjacent “pommes frites” truck so local could get their fix of his addictive fries during the clean up. We’d certainly be in line.

Weekend Picks, May 13–15

It’s the weekend for tastings, with everything from ice cream to oysters being served up around the North Shore. It starts on Saturday with the folks from Batch visiting Shubie’s in Marblehead from noon to 3:00 with their super-premium ice cream made in Jamaica Plain. We tasted some this winter at a blogger event, and it was fantastic.

The decadence continues up the road at Busa Wine and Spirits in Salem. The Loire Valley Wine Bureau is taking the area by storm for the month of May, pairing muscadet and oysters at several Boston restaurants. North Shore residents can check out this duo on Saturday from 2:00 to 5:00, with free muscadet samples and freshly shucked oysters. Busa says: “This unpretentious wine from the Loire Valley has dry, mineral flavors and acidity that pair perfectly with Boston and New England’s cuisine of oysters, fried clams, and lobster rolls.” Tastings on Saturday include two muscadets and a sancerre.

If you’re not into oysters, you may want to head west on Saturday afternoon. Wine ConneXtion in North Andover is holding its Grand Tasting from 1:00 to 6:00 with 50 wines being poured and food for pairing from Tommy Grella of “The Next Food Network Star.” Several preferred wines such as malbecs, amarones, and unique grape varietals will be offered at a one-day discounted price.

Beer lovers will want to make it to Pamplemousse in downtown Salem. We’ve heard a lot of buzz lately about the new Notch Session Beers, and brewer Chris Lohring will be on hand from 2:00 to 4:00 to pour samples and tell you all about this newcomer to the North Shore brewing scene.

Saturday evening, head up to Newburyport’s historic city hall for a huge wine tasting to support Yankee Homecoming, from 6:00 to 9:30. You’ll have the chance to taste 100 wines courtesy of Leary’s Fine Wines & Spirits as well as brews from  Mercury Brewing Company. The beverages will be accompanied by cheese from Cabot of Vermont and hors d’oeuvres created by local chefs and restaurants. Tickets are $30 ahead of time or $35 at the door.

You’re even allowed to start drinking early on Saturday. (not Tuesday as previously reported) From 8:00 to 11:00, Ipswich Ale’s Tapmobile will be on hand to pour fresh brews during the 5.5 mile Essex River Race. Enjoy the gorgeous river views from the Essex Shipbuilding Museum on Main Street.

Weekend Picks, May 6–8

No plans for the weekend? We’ve got you covered. Start things off right with some local wine. Isaaks of Salem owner Ian Bennett will be handing out samples from 4:00 to 7:00 tonight at Shubie’s in Marblehead. Try all three varieties: Dry Honey, Popp Road Raspberry, and Sweet Tooth Honey. If you’re a fan of the Vineyard Road, you may want to return to Shubie’s between 12:00 and 3:00 on Saturday for samples from their portfolio.

Also on Friday are two farm openings: Cider Hill in Amesbury and Smolak Farms in North Andover. Cider Hill has spent months renovating their store, including updating the bakery to a full-scratch operation. Owner Glenn Cook says the new offerings will include bread baked from grain ground right before the bread is made. The peach trees are blooming, the apple trees are next, and the chickens are arriving around lunchtime.

Smolak Farms is sporting a renovated animal and playground area and says the farm stand will be getting a makeover to have more of a café feel. There will be espressos, lattes, chai, and lunch specials to accompany their pies, muffins, and donuts. Opening day activities include free hayrides, free crafts and games for children in the barn (10:00-2:00), and cider donuts for half price.

Sunday is Mother’s Day, of course, and if you haven’t already made plans, head over to Wine ConneXtion in Andover on Saturday from 12:00 – 5:00 for ideas on treating mom to breakfast in bed. They’ve teamed up with Salem’s  A&J King Bakery and Ocean Spray Juice for a tasting of wine, champagne, juice, and baked goods. Offerings include chocolate bouchon, caramel bread pudding, and seasonal tarts with farm-grown berries and sweetened ricotta. Best of all, donations from the event will benefit the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless.

Weekend Picks, April 29-May 1

We’re keeping our fingers crossed for good weather this weekend and looking forward to some fun events. Start things off right by attending Ipswich Museum Pub Night, co-sponsored by Ipswich Ale Brewery, from 6:00 to 10:00 on Friday night. There will be beer, pub fare, raffle prizes, and live music by Orville Giddings.

On Saturday from 2:00 to 5:00, Busa Wine and Spirits in Salem is holding its 10th Annual Spring Welcoming Party. Taste wine, beer, and/or spirits while listening to swing music, and enter a raffle to win a Heineken BeerTender.

On Sunday, the Newburyport Farmer’s Market opens, and they have Frequent Farmer cards available this year. When you purchase $5 worth of farm product at one of the participating booths, you will receive a card. For every $5 worth of produce, fruit, meat, fish, or plant products you purchase from that farmer, you receive a stamp. When you accrue 10 stamps, you’ll receive $5 worth of product from that booth.

Also on Sunday is the Pajama Brunch at Cafe Polonia. They’re serving lunch and brunch menus from 10:00 to 4:00, and you get 10% off your check if you wear your jammies.

Starting at 3:00 on Sunday, the folks at Chive Catering will be serving up local pork, local beers, and local music at the Cox Reservation in Essex. Sip beer while exploring the salt marsh farm and listening to Boston band Qwill, then enjoy a five-course supper celebrating a recently dressed and cured Maine pig. Tickets are $100 each or two for $175, and all proceeds go to the Essex County Greenbelt Association.

Last but not least, there’s still time to reserve a spot in the From Scratch Pasta Class, at 62 Restaurant and Wine Bar in Salem. Sunday night at 6:00, Chef Bettencourt will walk student-diners through the pasta-making process, including the techniques behind making wonderful shapes and regional varieties. Guests will finish the evening with a three-course dinner featuring a choice of starter, a full pasta tasting, and dessert. The class is $55, and reservations are required. Call (978) 744-0062.

Weekend Picks: Special Valentine Edition

The Blue Ox in Lynn is not revealing much about their menu on the big night, but there will be dinner specials, and women receive a rose upon arrival. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal there last year. By the way, the next cooking demo at Blue Ox is March 22 at 7:00 and features carrot soup, hand-rolled gnocchi, and banana caramel cake ($39 per person).

Ceia Kitchen & Bar in Newburyport is offering a three-course Valentine’s dinner every night in February. The cost is $45 and includes items like smoked paprika pappardelle, warm fingerling and tomato salad with poached egg, and banana brulee. The menu changes weekly and is on Ceia’s website.

The Emerson Inn in Rockport is serving their Valentine’s menu Saturday the 12th and Monday the 14th. It’s a study in decadence, with items like duck and truffle paté with pomegranate gastrique, butter-poached lobster salad, grilled half-rack of lamb or pepper-crusted filet, and raspberry napoleon or molten lava cake. The cost is $49 per person.

Green Land’s prix fixe menu is $65 and includes an amuse bouche, choice of appetizer such as crispy duck wings, a salad or soup, an entrée, and a dessert (caramel turtle cheesecake sounds good). Larry Young will be playing violin tableside at the Salem restaurant from 7:00 to 9:00 on the 14th.

Nathaniel’s at the Hawthorne Hotel in Salem is serving up a lovely traditional menu with baked brie for two; rack of lamb, chateaubriand, or cod with lobster and vegetable nage; and chocolate fondue for two. Entrée prices are $28 to $30.

Friday through Monday of Valentine’s weekend, Finz Salem is cooking up romantic plates such as oysters topped with bacon vodka, tuna carpaccio with asparagus, and lemon-thyme glazed chilean seabass. The crispy whole striped bass sounds good, too, marinated in sesame, ginger, and miso and accompanied by avocado ocean salad and truffle butter.

Heavy on seafood, The Lyceum’s romantic menu features oysters and shrimp to start, appetizers like crab cakes and calamari, and entrees from salmon and fried haddock to veal pot roast and angus sirloin. The Lyceum is in Salem, and entrée prices range from $18 to $34.

In addition to their regular menu, a $65 prix fixe menu will be served at Salem’s 62 Restaurant and Wine Bar, with a paired wine option for $20. Pork belly or frisee with wild mushrooms are the first course, cannelloni or garganelli are the second. Entrees include scallops with beluga lentils or slow roasted pork with milk-braised fennel, and dessert choices include 62’s famous warm toffee pudding and hot brioche donuts.

For $35, Valentine’s Day lovers have some delicious-sounding choices at Victoria Station in Salem. Appetizers like carmelized pancetta and shaved fennel salad, entrees like baby bok choy and teriyaki salmon en papillote, and desserts like cherries flambé are all on offer.

The Wine Connextion in Andover has put together some interesting gift packages that combine wine, pastry, and flowers. For $50, you can send your Valentine Segura Viudas Brut Reserva or Rose, an assortment of cake truffles, and a red rose in a bud vase. For $125, your sweetie will receive Mumm Napa Brut Prestige or Rose, a heart-shaped chocolate cake, and six red roses. A dozen roses, a chocolate/strawberry cake, and Laurent-Perrier Cuvee Rose go into the $300 package, and those going all out this year can send diamonds, Louis Roedere Cristal Brut, two chocolate heart-shaped cakes flaked with 24-carat gold, and 30 red roses ($10,000). The packages are on sale through Saturday the 12th, and delivery service is available.

It’s been a while since we talked about weekend picks, but this weekend there’s so much going on we can barely scratch the surface.

Tonight is a great night to get some shopping done in Salem. Many of the stores are open late and are offering deals and treats to shoppers. Salem Wine Imports will have a free tasting and special discounts; Milk and Honey Green Grocer will offer cheese and crackers, food samples, and 15% off your purchases; and Pamplemousse holds their annual open house from 6:00 to 9:00 with wine, hors d’oeuvres, and free gift wrapping.

Also open late tonight are the shops in Hamilton and Wenham. Stop into the Wenham Museum from 4:00 to 8:00 to check out their terrific gift shop as well as the Gingerbread Express model train layout and the Gingerbread Contest Judging.

From 6:00 to 9:00 tonight, the Mansion at Turner Hill hosts the 13th Annual Taste of Ipswich Wine & Food Gala. You can taste local fare prepared by Ipswich’s finest restaurants, sip wine, and sample Ipswich and Stone Cat brews, as well as Mercury Soda Pop. This year, the proceeds will benefit the Ipswich Family YMCA. For more information, call the Ipswich YMCA at (978) 356-9622.

The Salem fun continues on Saturday, when Santa will make a visit to Coven. Your small person can check out the big guy while you warm up with a coffee and tasty treat. Also on Saturday, Green Land Café will be holding a Toys for Tots drive. Children eat free when they bring a toy to donate.

Marblehead continues its annual Christmas Walk this weekend with music, street entertainment, and shopping deals on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, you’ll find two wine tastings. From noon to 5:00, Haley’s will be sampling Y & B organic wines with Neil Deininger. (Even though it looks like a juice box, we like the Sauvignon Blanc) From noon to 4:00, the fun loving BZ Zohn will be back at Shubies with for a tasting of French, Italian, and California wines. Joining BZ will be Demaris Cahoon, owner of Landmark Winery in California, and Helen Gallo of Winebow Imports.

If you’re looking for a tree this weekend, stop by Marini Farm in Ipswich. Not only do they offer the kids cookies and crafts with Santa and tractor rides around the farm, but they’re also ladling out free bowls of hot chowder from the Clam Box to help fend off the falling temps.

Weekend Picks, November 4-7

The weekend is almost upon us, and we’re back with some ideas to keep you busy.

First off, tonight the Trustees of the Reservations hold the first of their 3rd Annual Celebrity Chef Dinner Series at Castle Hill hosted by the Trustees of the Reservations. Tonight’s dinner features Chef Robert Grant of The Butcher Shop in Boston, and the Dec. 2 dinner will feature Chef Sam Hunt of 15 Walnut in Hamilton.

On Sunday, there are fun things happening all over the North Shore. In Peabody, you’ll find the North Shore Bazaar 2010. While it’s not limited to food and drink, there will be more than 25 vendors offering organic, fair trade, locally resourced, or locally produced gifts and services. Lunch will be available as well.

Rockport Music is hosting a wine tasting at 4:00 on Sunday, offering attendees the opportunity to sample nine of the best French, German, and Californian wines, accompanied by a culinary creation, and then evaluate and vote on the best overall pairing of wine and food. California’s Benchmark Wine Group will lead the tasting, and Chef Ron Weisheit and Pastry Chef Rhonda Weisheit of Newburyport’s Pralines & Pepper will provide the food and some insight into the pairings.

Also on Sunday evening, the 17th Annual Taste of Lynnfield will be held at the Peabody Marriott, hosted by Lynnfield Educational Trust (LET), a non-profit that provides financial support to enhance the educational experience for all children in the Lynnfield Public schools.

This year, attendees will have the opportunity to sample the culinary talents of some outstanding area restaurants, including The Blue Ox (Lynn), 15 Walnut (Hamilton), Masa (Woburn), Jalapeno’s Mexican Restaurant (Gloucester), Turbine Wine Bar (Lynn), The Red Rooster (Lynnfield), T&L Wine Cellar (Lynnfield and Peabody), Cafe Jag’s (Wakefield), FINZ (Salem), New England Beverage (North Reading), Focaccia (Wilmington), Guilio’s Bakery (Wakefield), Mount Vernon at the Ship (Lynnfield), and Carrabba’s Italian Grill (Peabody).

Last but far from least, don’t forget that Sunday marks the first night of Salem Restaurant Week. Salem has had an unprecedented number of restaurants open this year, and if you’ve been itching to get out and try some of the new kids on the block, this is your chance. The deals are good enough that after you try something new, you can go back to an old favorite as well.

Our Weekend Picks

It looks like we’ll get the fall weather back this weekend, just in time for Halloween. The biggest Halloween party in the nation happens right here on the North Shore, and if you’re the partying kind and have never been to Salem for the big day, get thee hence; it really is a scene like no other. Just take heed when deciding how to get there.

Whether you have little ones looking forward to trick or treating, or you’re stocking up on candy to hand out to the neighbors, here is a list of the official trick or treat hours in North Shore communities.

For those of you who prefer smaller crowds and fine wines, on Saturday October 30, Shubie’s is holding their Corks and Forks Annual Fall Wine & Food Festival. From noon to 4:00, they will be pouring with over 50 wines, featuring The BZ Collection, MS Walker, European Cellars, Old Bridge Cellars, Wildman Imports, Grange Fine Wines, and Classic Wine Imports.

There will also be tastes to try along with the wine. Among others, Chef Lynn Aronson will be debuting her new cheese fondue, Fantastic Fortunes will be on hand with samples of the giant fortune cookies, and Tea Forte will be demonstrating their innovative teas and delicious blends.

The event is free to the public and special discounts on wines will be available that day. We’ve really enjoyed these tastings in the past, and you can read about our experience here.

While not happening on the weekend, next Tuesday’s Take a Bite out of Trafficking is an important event everyone should be aware of. Restaurants, chefs, and businesses located north of Boston will join together in support of Anuradha Koirala, one of CNN’s Top Ten Heroes of 2010 nominees. Her Maiti Nepal is a non-profit organization that combats the sex trafficking of Nepali women and children.

Held at the Ipswich Country Club, the event will kick off at 5:45 with a special chef’s tasting featuring samplings from various restaurants, including 62 Restaurant & Wine Bar, Tryst, The Blue Ox, Pellana, 15 Walnut, Shea’s, Ipswich Country Club, Salem Waterfront Hotel, 9 Elm, American BBQ, Mr. India, Ithaki, Bradford Tavern, and The Green Land Cafe.

In addition to culinary samplings from some of the area’s most recognized chefs, the evening includes an exclusive movie screening and an auction featuring a variety of fabulous items. Tickets are $45 presale, $50 at the door. Cash bar. All proceeds of the event go directly to Maiti Nepal.

Weekend Picks: the Short Version

Wow, what a whirlwind week. Things have been crazy busy, but we wanted to let you know about a few things going on this weekend.

First off, you still have today and tomorrow to take advantage of Cape Ann Restaurant Week and get a terrific three course meal for only $25 per person.

On Saturday, The Wine ConneXtion in North Andover will be hosting a grand tasting event to celebrate their first year in business. They will be pouring more than 50 hand-selected wines from all over the world  with some great one-day special pricing on selected wines. The Food Network’s Tommy Grella, now director of restaurants for Salvatore’s, will be serving up culinary treats for a fun-fillled afternoon of food and wine. The tastings run throughout the afternoon, but if you want a spot for the food demos, RSVP to press@wineconnextion.com.

Also on Saturday is an event we are looking forward to, the 28th Annual Essex Clam Festival, which runs from 11:00 to 4:00 at Memorial Park in Essex. (Rain date is Sunday.)

The highlight of the day will be the Clam Chowder Tasting, a competition that pits area restaurants against one another to determine who serves the best chowder on Cape Ann. Several local restaurants are expected to serve up their favorite chowder recipes starting at 12:00 and ending at 2:00.

The chowder will be judged by Legal Seafoods President & CEO Roger Berkowitz, Senator Bruce Tarr, Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante, Essex Town Selectman Jeff Jones, Chamber President Kathy Low, Amy Harnois of TD Bank, and local personality Ed Collard. The public will also have the opportunity to sample and vote on their favorite chowder. In addition to the chowder competition, there will be live entertainment, arts and craft tables, and children’s activities.

NSBC Weekend Picks

It’s Thursday again, and we’ve got some great picks for things to do this weekend—not only from us, but from our pals in the North Shore Bloggers Consortium as well.

Friday evening, the Wenham Village Improvement Society will host an Oktoberfest Fundraiser on the lawn at the Exchange at the Wenham Teahouse. Also Friday evening  from 4:00 to 7:00, Nadia Zenato of Italy’s Zenato Estate will be at Shubie’s in Marblehead, accompanied by the infamous BZ Zohn to feature their entire portfolio of wines. The Zenato Estate is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and as part of the celebration, Nadia is touring the Northeast. This will be her only retail stop in New England, and it’s your chance to taste some great wines and meet the owner of the estate.

On Saturday, October 2 from noon to 3:00, don’t forget the 3rd annual Chili Con-Carnival Cook-Off hosted by the Grog in their parking lot in Newburyport. Many restaurants and individual families will be competing for top spot, and you can enjoy live music, door prizes, and great chili, voting for your favorite.

Saturday evening in Salem, you’ll find Witchtoberfest at the Old Town Hall in Salem, a beer tasting fundraiser with 50% of the proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Salem. They promise “Good Beer, Good Music and Good Times.” There will be light hors d’oeuvres provided by local restaurants, a live band, a raffle, and a silent auction. The confirmed breweries so far include Shipyard Brewing, Mayflower Brewing, Blue Hills Brewery, Narragansett, Beerworks, and Cody Brewery.

And although not specifically food oriented, don’t forget that October 1st means the beginning of the Topsfield Fair and Salem’s Haunted Happenings!

While struggling with color and line, she was also learning how to roast a great chicken, and what it means to balance textures in a dish. She’s been interested in good food ever since. Married, the mother of two daughters, Heather now lives in Rockport, Mass. and is the food columnist for the Gloucester Daily Times.
