To Market, to Market…

For many foodies, the start of summer had nothing to do with the calendar or the weather—it’s all about the farmers markets. Personally, we are chomping at the bit. Apparently so are the folks in Newburyport, who had their farmers market opening day May 6th.  Marblehead jumps on the bandwagon this Saturday, June 9 (Veteran’s School, 217 Pleasant St., 9:00 to 12:00), followed by Salem on June 14, along with many others in late June and early July. Salem is held at Derby Square on Front St., Thursdays from 3:00 to 7:00, and Newburyport is at The Tannery Marketplace on Sundays from 9:00 to 1:00.

Many folks are excited that Swampscott is getting its own market this year, starting on June 10. It will be open Sundays through October from 10:00 to 1:00 at the high school. Clark Farm will anchor the market with a large variety of produce; John Crow Farms, Maitland Mountain Farms (known for their pickles and flowers), Fille de Ferme (homemade jams and jellies), Cherry Street Fish Market, and Big Sky Breads round out the initial group of vendors.

Weekend Picks, June 10-12

If you’ve been running around crazy busy for the past few weeks, you’re not alone. We feel your pain and think you might enjoy kicking back and relaxing at some of the great tastings and fun events going on this weekend.

Start things off right by stopping into Cup ‘n Board in Swampcott from 5:00 to 7:00pm for a beer tasting from Blue Hills Brewery. They’ll have tasty treats on hand as well, and an awesome selection of both beer and wine to take home for the weekend.

This weekend marks the beginning of strawberry season and Smolak Farms in North Andover is throwing a kickoff celebration from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm with strawberry picking, free activities for the kids and complimentary wine and prosecco tastings provided by Wine ConneXtion from 1:00 to 2:00pm.

They’ll also be starting pick-your-own season at one of our favorite farms, Cider Hill in Amesbury. And speaking of Cider Hill, they’ll be participating in the Marblehead Farmer’s Market, which opens on Saturday for the season. In a recent newsletter Glenn Cook, owner of Cider Hill said ” This is one of the best markets in the state!” Check it out from 9:00am to noon.

On Saturday afternoon there are several opportunities to try new tastes you may want to add to your summer drink list. At 2:00pm Busa Wine and Spirits in Salem is hosting an Iberian Wine Fiesta with summer reds from Bodegas San Valero in Carinena, Spain on offer as well as a handcrafted sangria. They will also be raffling off two $50 in -store gift certificates. The raffle tickets are $5 each and proceeds to go to Northeast Animal Shelter.

At 4:00pm Kappy’s Liquors in Danvers hosts a Grand Beer Tasting, which looks to be a terrific way to sample north shore brews with selections from Cody and Cape Ann Brewing, as well as more esoteric quaffs like Stone Brewery’s Arrogant Bastard Ale and Les Brasseurs’ Amadeus Biere Blanche Witbier.

There are also a couple of fundraisers worth attending on our radar. Salem’s Lobster Shanty hosts the 6th BaldBil YMCA Day. The Shanty will donate 5% of the entire day’s house proceeds to the Y’s financial assistance program in support of kids and families. All bartender tips will go to the Y, as well as what the waitstaff give to the bartender at night’s end. There will also be live music and some very cool items raffled off.

On Monday the 13th, head on over to Victoria Station in Salem. At 7:00pm they are hosting a Fundraiser for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. When executive chef John Andrews discovered that one of his staff had been diagnosed with MS he stepped up to rally support for her and the Society. There will be food tables by Victoria Station, Finz and The Lobster Shanty, Seaport Cafe and more, as well as raffles, auctions, celebrity bartenders and live music. Tickets are $10 at the door and all proceeds go toward the cause.

Summer in a Bottle

One of the things we miss most about summer is fresh basil from the garden. Yes, we made pesto and put it in the freezer in anticipation of the January blues, but we wish we could somehow bottle that wonderful flavor. And that’s exactly what four enterprising women did just over a year ago, creating Ellie’s Basil Vinaigrette.

Actually, Ellie Monnin, a chef, had been making the vinaigrette for many years, but last July, she got together with Darnell Vipperman, Barbara Bane, and Heidi Jarcho to turn it into a business. All four partners are Marblehead residents, and the product is currently made in the town’s St. Andrew’s Church kitchen.

The dressing is not only delicious, it’s sugar free, cholesterol free (it’s made with extra virgin olive oil), and gluten free. It’s also highly versatile—it can be used to dip bread or artichokes, as a dressing for potato salad, or a marinade for fish, chicken, or beef. It’s also good with hot pasta, as dressing for pasta salad, and drizzled over vegetables. We had it last night over chopped tomatoes and cubed fresh mozzarella for an easy, extremely tasty side dish.

Thus far, the vinaigrette has only been available at the Salem and Marblehead farmer’s markets. But Monnin and her partners are looking for a commercial kitchen where they can produce larger quantities and hope to have it in local stores this winter. Once that’s accomplished, they plan to expand into other products (they mentioned cookies), so stay tuned.

Summer At Last: Marblehead Farmer’s Market

Saturday was opening day for the Marblehead Farmer’s market, and we were thrilled to see a good turnout, especially since produce is not exactly abundant at this time of year. Fortunately, the Marblehead market has plenty to see and buy other than produce, including Thai food from Sticky Rice, baked goods from A&J King (almost sold out at 11:00, so go early), meat from Stillman’s Farmssalsa from Pam, lobsters courtesy of our favorite lobsterman, Paul Crowell, and interesting craft and community vendors as well.

The Marblehead market is located behind the Veteran’s Middle School (the old high school for us old-timers). It runs from 9:00 to 12:00 every Saturday, and there is plenty of parking.

There were lovely looking strawberries, of course, along with herbs, fresh eggs, honey, lettuce, and flowers. Having just been to the grocery store on Friday, we kept our purchases to a head of butter lettuce from Cider Hill Farm and a log of goat cheese from Crystal Brook Farm. The lettuce was fine but more bitter than we’re used to (not sure if this is due to the variety or the time of year); the cheese was wonderfully creamy and tangy.
