Dish Hearsay: Bizarre Happenings on State Street

Having watched a Marblehead institution slowly decline over the last 10 years or so, we were hopeful for a new life for Maddie’s Sail Loft when it reopened under new management. Sadly, we almost immediately heard tales of mediocre food and poor service. We’ve been understandably reluctant to make a confirmation visit—and now we’re glad we stayed away.

A reliable source e-mailed us this week to say she visited twice last month. On the first visit, a questionable cheeseburger resulted in an all-night illness. A return visit took an bizarre turn when a waitress delivering an item accompanied by the restaurant’s special ranch dip stuck her finger in our source’s dressing, licked her finger, and announced it was excellent!

“I was at a loss for words,” she wrote us. More than just a conversation killer, we fear.

That kind of blows the mind. I admit I laughed because it was so horrifying. I would love to know what caused the waitress to completely blank out everything she supposedly learned in her food safety class. (unless she didn’t take it.)
